Have You Tried Fruit & Veggie Play Dough?

Have You Tried Fruit & Veggie Play Dough?

After having my first baby, I started becoming more and more aware of what I was putting into her enthusiastic hands.  I was surprised by the synthetics/harmful substances I found in all sorts of materials from toys, to bottles and art supplies. One of the biggest surprises came when I stumbled across an article about play dough.  I’m not the most crafty of people, but it inspired me to peruse all over Pinterest searching for recipes that weren’t full of bland colors or hard to make. I was feeling a bit intimidated about the whole process on a Saturday morning (you leave the ingredients to foam for how long?) when luckily my mum saved the day with this non-toxic grandma-esche purchase.

Well done mum.

Eco-Dough:  Back in 2008 these graced the Hollywood Farmers Market—they’ve been the fav. natural molding material ever since. The coloring comes from organic fruit and veggie extracts like beets, blueberries and even sweet potatoes. The dough is made from rice flour, cornstarch, cream of tartar and salt.  The fragrance comes from organic essential oils and yes, it smells earthy and delightful. The company is owned by a hubby and wife following an old family recipe and all the products are made in the USA. Best of all, if you accidentally leave the play dough out too long you can help bring it back to life with olive oil, vegetable oil or coconut oil.

Let’s be honest, no matter how vigilant you are, your kids are gonna sneak in a nibble of play dough. And how can we blame them? The texture, the color, it looks delish. Anyway, the good news is that this play dough is non-toxic. Which is a great thing, since most play dough has petroleum additives, synthetic fragrances/colors, and borax to boot.

If you are looking to make your own non-toxic play dough and want to indulge your crafty side, then this recipe from Living Traditionally is pretty great (according to my sister).

Cheers,

Hazel
